Work-life balance is something we’re always striving to achieve. We want to give our all at the office but still have energy leftover at the end of the day to enjoy our downtime with friends and family. While it can be a challenge sometimes, the best time to start is now. Here are some tips to help you find the work-life balance that makes your life work for you.
Don’t be a slave to technology.
Know when to put the phone down and really engage at home. Try to make it a “tech-free table” at dinner, or set aside an hour to help your kids with their homework—no interruptions.
Streamline your routine.
How can you minimize the amount of time you spend getting ready? Maybe a minimalist approach to your wardrobe will help, or make preparing breakfast and lunches the night before a family activity.
Multitask the right way.
You’ll feel better about the quality of your work if you contribute and engage during meetings and give colleagues your undivided attention. But use your other time wisely: listen to your favorite podcast or read a book you don’t normally have time for on your commute. Balance includes finding time for things you like as well.
Take a lunch.
Don’t skip lunch. This is worth repeating: don’t skip lunch. Don’t just eat at your desk, either. Grab a table in the kitchen and talk to your coworkers, go for a walk, or even hit up a lunchtime yoga class, but take the time for a midday break and you’ll be re-energized for the rest of the day.
It’s okay to say no.
There are only 168 hours in a week. It’s okay if you don’t have time for everyone and everything, just be clear and firm (and kind) when you tell people no. Offer a solution or a compromise, but know your boundaries and stay within them.
Don’t worry about perfect.
Sometimes the highest expectations are the ones we have for ourselves. Give yourself permission not to worry about being perfect all the time and you’ll give yourself some much-needed breathing room at work and at home.
